Learn to dive

If you are thinking about learning to dive, or perhaps just trying it out, there are plenty of dive schools in Dubai and across the UAE that can help you out.
Most dive centres offer PADI certification courses, which are the most popular. Courses from NAUI, SSI, BSAC, CMAS etc are also available from some dive centres.
If you are curious, but not 100 % sure, most dive centres will offer either a "try-dive" or a Discover Scuba experience - this will allow you to "try it out" and find out for yourself if you want to earn your diving license or not. Most people that try end up doing their license course.
Al Boom Diving, Pavilion Dive Centre & Freestyle Divers are some of the most popular PADI dive centres to offer beginners courses.

Pleasure dives
There is great debate about where you find the best diving in the UAE - it all depends on what you are in to.
Diving in the UAE can be divided into three catagories; Arabian Gulf, the East Coast and Musandam.
The Arabian Gulf of the coast of Dubai and Abu Dhabi offers some interesting wreck dives, whereas the East Coast and Musandam would be the places to go to find coral reefs. Actually part of the Sultanate of Oman, Musandam is considered by many UAE based divers as the best diving in the area.
Pavilion Dive Centre and TDIC offer dive trips to the wrecks of the Gulf.
Al Boom Diving and Freestyle Divers offer daily dives on the East Coast.
Al Boom Diving also offers daytrips to Musandam along with Al Marsa, who operates both daytrips and liveaboard boats.

Dive clubs

If you are looking to join a dive club, there are a couple of options in Dubai, all depending on where you live.
In the Al Quoz area of Dubai, you will find the Desert Sport Diving Club, which is a BSAC branch. The club has a nice club house complete with boat parking, compressor, nitrox station, BBQ area and bar !. Regular club nights for members and anyone else interested in diving.
Sharjah, north of Dubai, is home to Sharjah Wanderers Dive Club. Sharjah Wanderers has some nice facilities, including a swimming pool, and has social gatherings as well as regular club dives.

Equipment shops & equipment service

Gone are the days when it was absolutely impossible to either find new scuba gear or get something fixed. All major brands are now being stocked by local distributors and if something is broken, there are a few good workshops that can help you out.
Scuba Dubai is a bit of an institution in Dubai. They are the dealers for Scuba Pro & Uwatec and can also help if you are looking for specialty equipment. Also on-site workshop that can handle most repairs and services and air/nitrox fill station.
Al Boom Diving are dealers for Aqualung, Cressi-Sub, Tusa and Suunto, amongst other brands and also have a work shop and air/nitrox fill station.
Pavilion Dive Centre stocks equipment from Mares and can also offer air fills.

Diving safety and regulations
Scuba Diving in the UAE is regulated by Emirates Diving Association (EDA) and we recomment that divers only dive with EDA accredited dive centers.
Apart from being the regulatory body, EDA also arrange social events and takes part in enviromental work, such as awareness programmes, clean up days etc.
Divers living in the UAE are encouraged to join EDA as a member. The annual membership fee is Dhs 100 (May 2007) and members receive a number of benefits.
